THE PROJECT

From climate target to bus route – without detours.

Rebus Regionalbus Rostock has set itself an ambitious goal: From 2034, only emission-free vehicles will be on the road. H2APEX makes it possible – and has been providing proof since 2023 that this is not a vision of the future, but everyday life on northern Germany’s roads.

Since spring 2023, H2APEX has been responsible for the complete hydrogen supply of the Rebus fleet: production, refueling infrastructure, logistics and ongoing operations – all from a single source. The green hydrogen is produced directly at the Rostock-Laage site, RFNBO-certified in accordance with EU guidelines and powered by the company’s own 11.5 MWp solar system.

Today, almost a third of the Rebus fleet runs on hydrogen. This corresponds to around 25 percent of all fuel cell buses in use throughout Germany.

Planning & approval

Feasibility study, expert reports, approval procedure and documentation – H2APEX managed the project as a strategic planner right from the start.

Infrastructure

Two H₂ filling stations at the Rebus depots in Güstrow and Bad Doberan, built and operated by H2APEX. Stationary storage tanks with a capacity of around 2,300 kg.

Production & Logistics

Green hydrogen from our own electrolysis, powered by renewable electricity. Optimized filling and transport logistics directly from the production site.

Service & Operation

H2APEX operates the systems, maintains them and is available around the clock. Rebus employees have received comprehensive training in the new tank technology.

Reliability as an operating condition.

In summer 2025, the fleet cracked the million-kilometer mark. No breakdowns, no interruptions, no routes canceled. Since July 2025, H2APEX has been delivering the 16 tons of hydrogen required each month as planned – just nine months after the start of regular bus operations.

H2 Quantity:

The project can produce 300,000 kilograms of hydrogen per year. This is the amount of hydrogen needed to supply the regional buses and significantly reduces the environmental impact of fossil fuels.

Mobile storage:

H2APEX has developed its own mobile storage solutions that enable flexible and efficient refueling of buses on the road.

Stationary storage:

The stationary storage capacity of 2,347 kg ensures that a sufficient quantity of hydrogen is available at all times to meet demand. In this way, gaps in supply can be avoided and a reliable planning basis is created for the bus companies.

For comparison: a typical hydrogen bus requires around 10 kg of hydrogen for 100 km. With 2,347 kg of hydrogen, around 235 buses could be refueled for a distance of 100 km.

Refueling:

Approx. 10 minutes per bus at 25 kg. The hydrogen filling station is capable of refueling 52 buses in 16 hours. Refueling takes place via a mobile hydrogen trailer.

Information:

H2APEX has been operating the first hydrogen filling station for heavy goods vehicles in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern since 2022. This enables trucks, buses and cars to be refueled with climate-neutral hydrogen.

WAL – Hydrogen from Lubmin

Green hydrogen made in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: 100 MW electrolysis plant in Lubmin. Large-scale production will supply up to 10,000 tons of hydrogen per year from 2029.

Lubmin combines what is being sought individually elsewhere: direct connection to offshore wind energy in the Baltic Sea, existing pipeline infrastructure of the former Nordstream pipelines and the connection to the new German hydrogen core network – all at one location.

H2APEX is developing the WAL – Hydrogen from Lubmin project together with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. With 100 MW in the first expansion stage and a total potential of up to 600 MW, Lubmin is not a pilot project. It is a foundation.

The WAL project is the first component of the Hydrogen Hub Lubmin to be realized. In cooperation with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), an electrolysis capacity of initially 100 MW is being created here – as the core of a plant that will scale up to 600 MW in the long term. The hub is the roof, WAL the first pillar underneath.

WAL – Hydrogen from Lubmin

With 100 MW, WAL is the first expansion stage of the Lubmin Hydrogen Hub – designed for a total capacity of up to 600 MW. A project with substance: land secured, electricity secured, partners on board. The Hydrogen Hub Lubmin is located directly at the starting point of the FLOW hydrogen core network – Germany’s most important north-south axis for green hydrogen. The first 400 kilometers of the converted pipeline have been in operation since December 2025. This will enable H2APEX to supply hydrogen produced directly to industrial customers throughout Germany – from Saxony-Anhalt via Berlin and Leipzig to Baden-Württemberg.

H2APEX demo system

H2APEX demo system H2APEX has built a plant for the production of hydrogen at the Rostock-Laage site and also operates its own hydrogen filling station. Due to its proximity to the A19, the location is particularly well suited to providing the fuel required for refueling H2-powered vehicles.

Task

H2APEX wanted to lay the foundation for the sustainable production of green hydrogen with its first own plant. This plant will produce hydrogen and also serve as a demo for potential customers and investors. At the same time, a filling station was to be built to allow heavy-duty vehicles in particular to refuel with hydrogen while on the road.

Solution and implementation

Our state-of-the-art plant is located in Laage, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and is designed to produce hydrogen by electrolysis. This innovative technology uses renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power to convert water into clean hydrogen and oxygen.

As part of our commitment to promoting the hydrogen economy, we also operate an H2 filling station for heavy-duty vehicles. This filling station enables trucks and other heavy vehicles to use environmentally friendly hydrogen as fuel and thus make an important contribution to reducing emissions.

Our plant is a significant step towards a sustainable future and stands for innovation and progress in clean energy production.

Achievements

The plant was put into operation in 2020. Since then, it has been used for the production, use, storage and marketing of H2. The energy required for operation comes from nearby renewable energy sources, primarily wind and solar.

REALLABORH2-WYHLEN

REALLABORH2-WYHLEN The real-world laboratory is located in Wyhlen, a district of Grenzach-Wyhlen in Baden-Württemberg. Research is being conducted there to determine how hydrogen can be integrated as an energy carrier into various sectors. These include, for example, the use of hydrogen in transportation, industrial process heating, and energy storage.

Task

At the real-world laboratory in Whylen, hydrogen is produced locally at the site where electricity is generated. The goal is to convert hydropower into storable energy through electrolysis and make it directly usable.

Solution and Implementation

A project was planned in Whylen (Baden-Württemberg) that takes a holistic approach. It covers the entire hydrogen value chain, from production and storage to use. A 5 MW electrolysis plant, including pressure storage, will be built on-site. The hydrogen produced can be loaded onto trailers and transported.

Achievements

TheH2-Wyhlen real-world laboratory plays an important role in the further development of hydrogen technologies and helps to further unlock the potential of hydrogen as a clean and sustainable energy source.

It is currently still in the implementation phase. An efficient plant structure has been developed, and the bidding process for the main components has been successfully completed. All main components have been ordered.

H2 Wyhlen

Project Data for the“H2-Wyhlen” Hydrogen Real-World Laboratory

Electrolysis capacity:

The electrolysis capacity of the real-world laboratory is 5 megawatts. This capacity enables the efficient splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen, which forms the basis of hydrogen production.

H2 Storage:

The real-world laboratory has a storage capacity of 3.8 metric tons of hydrogen.

Production capacity:

The plant can produce 90 kilograms of hydrogen per hour, which corresponds to an annual production volume of approximately 720 metric tons.

Usable waste heat:

The real-world laboratory generates approximately 12 gigawatt-hours of usable waste heat. This waste heat can be reused, for example for heating, which increases the energy efficiency of the entire facility.

Trailer Filling Stations:

There are four trailer refueling stations that allow hydrogen to be loaded into special transport trailers.

HyBit Bremen

HyBit Bremen The HyBit project is the starting point for the decarbonization of steel production in Bremen. At the power plant site in Mittelsbüren, green hydrogen is to be produced using the electrolysis process to enable the production of climate-neutral steel in the future.

Task

Steel production is one of the biggest CO2 emitters in the world. The pressure on the industry to sustainably reduce its negative impact on the environment is therefore correspondingly high. The task of this project was to provide green hydrogen directly on site for the reduction of iron ore in the future.

Solution and implementation

The HyBit project is a major milestone in this direction. To this end, Arcelor Mittal’s steelworks is switching from the conventional blast furnace process to the innovative direct reduction process. In the current blast furnace process, the iron ore is converted into iron using hard coal coke, which releases a lot of CO2. In future direct reduction, hydrogen will replace hard coal coke. Instead of climate-damaging CO2, only water vapor is released as a by-product.

The project to build a 10 MW electrolysis plant with transfer station, trailer filling and emergency feed-in is currently underway. The facility will be designed in such a way that it fits into the existing infrastructure.

H2 storage:

HyBit is capable of storing 600 kg of hydrogen at a time. This high storage capacity is important in order to balance out fluctuations in production and consumption and to create the basic conditions for a continuous supply.

The plant has a production capacity of 180 kg/h, 1,560 tons per year. This means that it can produce 180 kg of hydrogen per hour, which equates to a capacity of 1,560 tons per year.

Usable oxygen:

In addition to hydrogen, oxygen is also produced, which can be used in other industrial processes. The production rate is 1,440 kg of oxygen per hour.
