A Look Back: From the First Idea to a Publicly Listed Company
H2APEX now looks back on over 20 years of development, during which many milestones have paved the way to today’s success.
The Beginning: Establishment of a Renewable Energy Company
In the year 2000, developments in renewable energies were still in their infancy. A significant step towards sustainability in that year was the passing of the Renewable Energy Sources Act. In that very year, Mathias Hehmann founded his renewable energy company in a garage. In the following years, H2APEX developed automated photovoltaic systems installed on traffic control systems, weather stations, and vending machines. A floating solar installation aims to showcase the potential of water surfaces.
New Focus: Research and Development in the Field of Hydrogen
From 2012 onward, the company shifted its research and development activities to focus on hydrogen. Cooperation partnerships are established with renowned research institutions.
Special milestones:
2019
- Relocation to Rostock/Laage due to excellent infrastructure.
2021
- The automotive supplier RHODIUS becomes the first tenant in the H2APEX industrial park.
- APEX launches the trial operation of its public hydrogen refueling station for trucks and buses in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
- Commencement of development of a hydrogen transport container operating at 350 bar pressure, as well as a fuel tank for buses and trucks.
- H2Apex becomes carbon-neutral itself and supplies its own company, including the industrial park, with self-generated energy.
2022
- H2APEX builds an electrolyzer for the first hydrogen project in the German steel industry for EWE and swb. It is considered one of the largest industrial hydrogen projects of its kind in Germany and Europe to date.
- The first hydrogen refueling station for heavy-duty vehicles in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania goes into operation.
- H2APEX implements the hydrogen real-world laboratory ‘H2-Wyhlen’ for EnBW. H2APEX will act as a system integrator to build a 5 MW electrolysis plant for the production of green hydrogen.
The Outlook: Research Continues
Together with established research institutions (especially the Leibniz Institute for Catalysis), the Rostock-based company is currently developing the next big innovation:
The chemical storage of hydrogen.
